Detention; is it required in Indian Educational System?

Detention; is it required in Indian Educational System?

Development is the natural phenomena of any nation. The committed young, energetic, enthusiastic and dynamic workforce only can change the fate of any nation.
India is now the youngest country of the world. Why? Because, we have around 56.0 corer young people under the age of 25 years. If we take the School going children between the age of 10 and 19 it is about 22.5 corers. What does this indicate?
Looking at the demographic trends it is vivid that for the next 30 to 40 years India could have or should have youthful, productive, dynamic and working age population. At this time rest of the world including Chaina and Europe, is aging. Therefore, it is evident that India became workforce of the world. Yes, in coming years, the entire world has to look at India for their basic workforce requirements.
At this juncture, we have to look into the scenario carefully and deeply. Yes, we have workforce but all of this will only happen if we got one key thing rightly. That is EDUCTION and SKILL DEVELOPMENT training. As per our Indian outlook, it is not just educational challenge but a demographic opportunity. Also we should see it from the angle of Natural Security obligation. If the Education and skill development programs are not taken up in a right way and at the right time that may lead to disaster.
As we know that the availability of youth in any nation is a boon if utilised in a proper way and otherwise it would be a curse. As on date, our competition is not within our country but across the Globe. Positive response to the competition should be our priority. Modern technology is facilitating to complete our job with lesser manpower and time. As a result Job opportunities will come down to the younger generation. So, we should understand where the technology is leading us.
In a highly competitive environment, if 26% of 1.25 billion population, don’t know how to read and write even though they got degrees on hand, we have the world’s largest population of illiterate people of the world.
In this present scenario, let us think just if we promote all the students who do not deserve or possess required knowledge to the higher classes without detaining them, what happens? Now it is an alarming state or high time to think that without proper basic knowledge or foundation, if a student is promoted and kept in higher class, how he would cope up with an ever changing technology. How his competitive environment is upgraded without proper understanding of basics?
One more thing to add this is that we are not concentrating on thinking pattern of the student. In the present educational system nobody teaches the student “how to think”. Parents and School management is focusing on getting grades by their children and not focusing on the comprehensive development of the student. A student should understand the essence of LIFE and education should be a pragmatic one. It should give us confidence to lead a purposeful, meaningful and a blissful life. Actually, the Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance but it has become a passport for getting an employment.
Education should fill an absolute confidence in the heart of the student but mostly it is giving a relative confidence. It should project a clear vision of LIFE but hardly assuring a firsthand employment. At this juncture, we strongly feel that it is not sufficient to have degrees without skills and clarity in domine knowledge.
Too much of our education has concentrated on filling of children’s heads with unnecessary data. In most of the cases, students are subjected to memorise like robots without knowing the concept. The concentration of school management and parent, is not imparting education to their brood and making them knowledgeable, but on getting degrees to their students. The culture of passing of examination by hook or crook is distracting the object of real Education. We are neither testing the real talent of the student nor identifying the interest of the student.
There is one story which narrates like this…. In a forest all the animals have been asked by the Lion, the king of the forest, to undergo a test to prove their performance. One day all the animals like a monkey, elephant, fish, horse, donkey, dog, tiger etc., have been assembled and the test was to climb a tree to prove their talent. That story reflects how we are testing our future generation.
In olden days, it was the fault of the parents if a child is not sent to the school. Today if a kid is not educated; it is the fault of the society or the state. The Government, for several reasons allowing the students to go to the higher classes without passing. Most of the political parties are supporting them in order to keep their vote bank intact. This is reflecting upon certain things like;
1)      Poor knowledge of subject
2)      Poor Skills and abilities
3)      Poor intention to learn
4)      Typical behaviour patterns (Resistance to Change)
In the light of global competition, the student has to be trained to meet the challenges ahead of him/her. I am bringing some of the areas, in my knowledge, where our attention is required, to your kind notice please.
1)      Instead of promoting the undeserved student to the next class we can focus on other alternatives to ignite his/her intelligence.
2)      We can throw challenges to the learner and ask them to solve such challenges.
3)      We can appreciate their performance time to time and offer little incentives to inspire them.
4)      We can encourage them to cultivate the habit of discussing the problem with their peer group, teachers or parents.
5)      It would be better to motivate the student to learn the concept instead of mugging the subject. Subject will be clear when we teach it.
6)      Appreciating the attitude of responding to the situation instead of reacting will assure better results.
7)      A student should be motivated to question the unknown but not probing or faultfinding.
8)      All the way students are to be nurtured to be fearless and confident of living with honour.
While concluding, I submit the following for your kind consideration. As our India would be younger country in the world, the Government should think of a positive solution to the problem and at this juncture, we opine that the detention system should be there In order to reap the fruits of globalisation.
Thanking you,
Yours faithfully,
